Minimalist 30 Day Declutter Challenge
Now that it is spring, I have spring cleaning on my mind. We are also preparing to move into our first home next month and, while we are SO excited, it is also only around 1000 square feet for our growing family of four. I told my husband that I felt like if we are going to be truly happy in our little home, we needed to really downsize and live simply and minimally with less stuff. So I decided to create myself a little minimalist decluttering challenge to work on before we move into our new home!
I have been trying to create a minimalist lifestyle for our family for about a year now. I’m quite a sentimental person and tend to hold onto little things that just end up cluttering my physical space. I’m creating this simple 30-day minimalism challenge to give myself some direction and motivation in decluttering my home. Feel free to follow this 30-day challenge yourself, whenever you feel ready to start!
Set a time limit
I also suggest setting a time limit for each of these challenges. Each of these could easily take up a few hours or even your whole day. Set a timer for 20 or 30 minutes, declutter as much as you can, and then call it!
Day 1 – Trash bag challenge
Take a trash bag, set your timer, and walk throughout your home. Fill the bag with any items you see that you would like to donate.
Day 2 – Wardrobe purge

Clean out your closet and dresser. Get rid of clothes that you haven’t worn for a long time, no longer fit, or are damaged or stained. Donate or sell clothes in good condition and toss out clothes that are damaged beyond repair.
Day 3 – Kitchen countertop cleanup
Completely clear off your kitchen counters. Put away appliances you don’t use daily, put clean dishes away, and relocate/donate decorative items like candles or vases. Wipe your counters clean.
Day 4 – Kitchen drawers cleanout
Go through your kitchen tools, cookware, and silverware (anything in your kitchen drawers). Get rid of duplicates, things you never use, and anything broken.
Day 5 – Junk drawer detox
We all have a junk drawer right? Currently mine is a junk basket because our kitchen is so small, but it needs to go! Sort through it all and find a permanent home for everything.
Day 6 – Bookshelf simplification

I love my little library but sometimes those books are just taking up space! Try donating at least 10 books you’ve already read, never finished, or probably won’t ever read.
Day 7 – Pantry organization
Go through your pantry. Get rid of expired items and consider donating nonperishable items that you haven’t used in a long time that aren’t expired to your local food pantry! Organize similar items together and create a system that will make things more accessible to you.
Day 8 – Paperwork purge
Am I the only one that has a giant stack of “important” paperwork somewhere? That paper clutter doesn’t have to take up space! Look through those papers and get rid of anything that’s no longer relevant. Create a folder for saving important documents.
Day 9 – Toy declutter

Luckily, my two boys are still pretty young so I can go through their toys without very much fighting and emotion. If your kids are a bit older, involve them in going through toys and decide what toys they actually play with and what ones they would want to donate. I find that my kids actually play better when they have fewer toys.
Day 10 – Medicine cabinet makeover
Take a look at everything in your medicine cabinets. Dispose of any expired medications or anything you don’t use anymore.
Day 11 – Digital declutter
Go through your apps on your phone and delete any that you don’t use. Consider deleting apps that create a lot of distraction as well.
Day 12 – Linen closet organization
Organize your linen closet by getting rid of or donating towels, sheets, and other bedding that you don’t use. Create a system that will keep things neat.
Day 13 – Shoe declutter
I think most of us own at least a few pair of shoes that we rarely or never wear. You can donate or sell shoes in good condition that you don’t wear anymore. Consider minimalizing and keeping just one pair of tennis shoes, sandals, boots, etc.
Day 14 – Email inbox organization

Organize your email inbox by deleting old emails, organizing important emails into folders, and unsubscribing from newsletters you no longer read.
Day 15 – Electronics edit
Gather your old, unused, and broken electronics to donate or recycle.
Day 16 – Car cleanup
Cleanup your car! Clean out the trash and clutter that may have accumulated. Take it to a car wash and vacuum it out for a bonus!
Day 17 – Living room simplification
Simplify your living room space by getting rid of excess decor, unnecessary furniture, and clutter that may have started to pile up.
Day 18 – Kitchen table cleaning
My kitchen table is a place that clutter will often pile up. Clear off all the clutter, find everything a place, and wipe down the table. Create a space that will be ready for your family to gather for a meal.
Day 19 – Home decor declutter
Go through your home decor with a critical eye. Keep only the things that serve a purpose or bring you joy. Get rid of or donate the rest.
Day 20 – Garage cleanup
Organize your garage! Get rid of things you haven’t used in a long time. Create an organizational system that works for you.
Day 21 – Nightstand organization

Clean off your nightstand. Get rid of the visual clutter. Go through the drawers if you have one and get rid of trash that may have piled up.
Day 22 – Bathroom drawers
Go through your bathroom drawers and get rid of old toiletries or things you no longer use. See how much you can simplify.
Day 23 – Create a donation box

Create a permanent donations box in your home where you can continually collect items. Encourage your spouse and kids to contribute as well.
Day 24 – Makeup and skincare products purge
Get rid of old and expired makeup and skincare products. Be selective and minimize the products you use.
Day 25 – Desk/office cleanup
Clean up your desk and office space. Organize important documents and throw away or recycle any old, unnecessary documents.
Day 26 – Laundry room simplifications
Simplify your laundry room. Throw away empty containers. Take out the trash or get rid of the pile of laundry lint (am I the only one?).
Day 27 – Drop off donations
Take this day to drop off the donations you collected to your local thrift store!
Day 28 – Mindful consumption day
On this day, practice mindful consumption by resisting the urge to buy anything new.
Day 29 – Final sweep
Do a final sweep of your home and identify any remaining clutter or areas that need some organizing.
Day 30 – Create a maintenance plan
Create a plan to maintain the hard work you’ve put in the last 30 days and keep your home clutter free and organized. Celebrate yourself for completing this challenge!
