Feeding your baby solid foods is such an exciting thing! However, it can be difficult to come up with ideas of things to feed them, especially healthy breakfast ideas. They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and that is true for your baby too! If you are looking for new breakfast ideas, I am going to share some ideas that my 9-month-old baby loves. Easy breakfast ideas are important to me (especially on a busy morning) so most of these are pretty simple. I’ve also included a variety of foods and ideas you can try out that the whole family will enjoy.

These ideas are great for families trying out baby-lead weaning! It is so fun to give your baby the opportunity to try new foods. Here are just a few reminders for your baby-led weaning journey: Remember that breast milk should be the primary form of nutrition for babies until at least age one according to American Academy of Pediatrics. Also, cow’s milk and honey should never be given to babies until they are a year old. Lastly, it is recommended to avoid added sugar until age two or for even longer if possible!

Fresh fruit

Fruits make great breakfast foods and great practice for finger foods! The most important thing is to serve them in a way that is safe for your baby. You will want to choose soft fruits like strawberries, blueberries (mashed to avoid choking), bananas, raspberries, grapes (cut to avoid choking), peaches, and pears. Fruit has key nutrients that your baby needs and most babies really enjoy fruit as one of their first foods. Choose fruits that are in season for higher quality and richer flavor. In-season fruit is often on sale so that can help your budget as well!

Low-Sugar Cereal

Honestly, some mornings I just don’t have it in me to actually make something. It’s great to have some low-sugar cereal options on hand like Cheerios or Chex. This is also a great opportunity for babies to practice the pincer grasp. I just put a handful of cereal on my baby’s tray and he gets to practice picking up pieces one at a time. I wouldn’t try a bowl of cereal and milk at this age because 1) it is not recommended for babies to have cow’s milk until one year old and 2) it would just make a big mess. Dry cereal is a great way to get your baby an easy breakfast on those busy mornings.

Yogurt

Yogurt is another great food for breakfast. Since added sugar isn’t recommended for babies, try plain yogurt or plain Greek yogurt with no sugar added. Mix in some fruit like strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries for some added flavor. You can spoon feed your baby to avoid some of the mess or you can give them a bowl and let them just go for it. Most babies can start using a spoon around 10 to 12 months old so this is good practice for them!

Eggs

Eggs are a great breakfast idea for your baby! They can be made so many different ways but I recommend scrambled eggs. That makes them the perfect size and consistency for a baby. You could also try hard-boiled eggs. Try just cutting them up into portions your baby can handle. Eggs are one of the best foods for breakfast because they are high in protein and make for a filling breakfast. Added salt isn’t recommended for babies under one so you don’t even need to season them! You can use some low-sodium seasonings if you want to add some flavor.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal is another good idea for baby’s breakfast. You serve it plain or add fruit, peanut butter, cinnamon, chia seeds, or any other add-in that sounds good! This is a very versatile breakfast choice but (fair warning!) can also get messy if you let your baby feed themselves. You can use quick oats for a quick breakfast or old-fashioned oats if you have a little more time on your hands.

Banana pancakes

Traditional pancakes are definitely a delicious breakfast choice but you can make some yummy and healthy pancakes for your little ones with mashed banana! I like this recipe for 4-ingredient banana pancakes by the Ambitious Kitchen. They are full of good nutrients and so easy to make. I would personally avoid maple syrup because it has a lot of sugar but you can top these with peanut butter, homemade jam, mashed fruit, applesauce, baby food, or just serve them plain!

Waffles

Waffles are also a good idea for breakfast! I think this mini waffle maker on Amazon is so cute and makes the perfect small portions for babies. Again, I would probably skip the maple syrup for these but there are so many options you can top them with instead. Again, you can try peanut butter, homemade jam, mashed fruit, applesauce, or baby food on top. You might find you also enjoy some of those maple syrup substitutes.

Muffins

Muffins are a great breakfast idea. There are a lot of low-sugar muffins recipes out there that would make a great meal for your baby. I would personally recommend this recipe from Scrummy Lane for low-sugar blueberry muffins that are definitely worth a try! You could definitely substitute the blueberries with any fruit that sounds good or whatever you have on hand. I like to make a big batch of muffins early in the week and enjoy them for breakfast all week.

French toast

French toast is any easy breakfast option because it requires so few ingredients. Whole wheat bread, eggs, milk, and cinnamon are all that you need to make a batch of French toast for you and your baby to enjoy. Use any of the topping ideas I listed above under “banana pancakes” in place of maple syrup. Cut into bite-size pieces or finger length strips for your baby to enjoy!

Cottage cheese and applesauce

Cottage cheese is high in protein and a great option for breakfast. Personally, my family enjoys mixing cottage cheese and applesauce for some great flavor. Try this with unsweetened applesauce to avoid extra sugar. This duo meets many of your baby’s nutritional needs and is just delicious!

Avocado toast

Avocado toast has definitely had its time of popularity on the Internet and social media but have you ever considered it as a good breakfast idea for your baby? Avocado is a great source of healthy fats that your baby needs. Top a piece of whole wheat toast with mashed avocado for a yummy, balanced breakfast for your baby. You can top with scrambled or fried eggs as well for some added protein.

These are all breakfast meals that I have tried and I know my 9-month-old baby really enjoys. I am definitely trying to set a foundation of helping my child learn to enjoy a variety of healthy foods. He always feels left out if everyone in the family is eating and he isn’t! Most of these ideas are things that I eat myself or make for more entire family and then share a small portion with my baby.

It can be so fun to introduce new foods to your baby. 9 months of age is an especially fun time where they are very interested in food and open to trying a variety of different foods. I hope this list gives you some ideas of something new you can try for your baby or even the whole family! Let me know in the comments if you have any questions or if you have been able to try any of these for your baby!
